LEARNING OBJECTIVES “Recognizing quality is much like recognizing art; everybody sees something different. With regard to online courses, your students, faculty, administrators, peers, and accrediting bodies may not know what to look for in assessing quality. Defining quality standards proves crucial to successful course design and implementation. “Quality Matters is a nationally recognized organization that promotes quality design of online and blended courses with a peer-review process. After completing the workshop, participants will have a better understanding of the current standards for designing an effective online course. They will be able to: A. Describe underlying principles of Quality Matters (QM) B. Use QM Rubric and explain scoring system C. Apply the QM Rubric to Online Course and scenarios Worshop completers will receive Certificate for completing the Quality Matters Peer Reviewer Training. Certificate will be issued by QM/MarylandOnline. |

WORKSHOP FACILITATOR Dr. Moustapha Diack is affiliated with the doctoral program in Science/Mathematics Education (SMED) at Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Diack is recipient of the International MERLOT Innovation Award 2009 -and- the 2009 Southern University Teacher of the Year Award. He is a Past-President (2006/2009) of the Louisiana Academy of Sciences and also Director of the MERLOT Africa Network (MAN). His current research is in the areas of Open Education Resources (OER) and Open Access (OA) as well as the integration and assessment of virtual learning environments (VLE). Diack is Quality Matters/MarylandOnline certified train the trainer (TTT). |
CURRICULUM AT A GLANCE
The workshop introduces participants to the process and applications of the Quality Matters (QM) standards in the design of quality online courses. QM is a faculty-centered, peer review process designed to certify the quality of online courses for hybrid and distance education. It uses a set of forty specific elements, distributed across eight broad standards and include:

3. Assessment and Measurement
4. Resources and Materials
5. Learner Engagement
6. Course Technology
7. Learner Support
8. Accessibility
Partcipants will gain an understanding of the Quality Matters (QM) process, compile examples of best practices in online courses, gather specific ideas for improving Their courses, and gain affirmation of their course’s strengths.
